Early Life and Education

Born as Mokotiyang Rekenet, meaning “born at night,” Taban Lo Liyong's early life was marked by struggle and displacement. At barely one year old, he was carried on his mother’s back for 150 miles across the border into northern Uganda as his father, Umbi, fled intra-clan persecution. His mother, Liyong, nicknamed him "Taban" (an Arabic word meaning “I am tired”) to symbolize the hardships she endured raising him in exile as one of his father’s three wives. Later, when his mother revealed the story behind the name, he officially adopted the moniker Taban Lo Liyong (“The Troubles of Liyong”) as his official name.

Liyong received his early education at Gulu High School and the Sir Samuel Baker School in Uganda before enrolling in a teachers’ college. He later pursued higher education at Howard University in the United States, earning a BA in English and Journalism. In 1968, he became the first African to receive an MFA in creative writing from the University of Iowa, where he refined his distinctive literary voice.
